salute brings the 80s version of the future to Electric Brixton
It felt nostalgic, but in a manufactured sense. The 80s representation of the future: bright lights, streamlined cars, and flying things watched through a VHS-style screen with a nod to the 00s through TRUE MAGIC.
All carefully concocted in a way that you’d be struggling to find many people at their show on Tuesday who actually remember any of that, but still resonate.
It must be this telescopic nose dive into the archives that is helping salute pave their vision in the present.
It’s what starts an unassuming Tuesday evening with a two-step and finishes with groups jumping in huddles and taps aff.
A relentless whirlwind of electricity, both in sound and visual form that gave you no other option but to dance.
I love it. You catch people that have clearly hurried from the office, likely sat staring at a screen, to then bouncing around the room and then screaming along. I’d bet completely unrecognisable to their colleagues. And that’s the beauty of it.
Just them and an incredible performance.
They continued the tradition of surprise guests throughout the show with collaboration artists such as Jessie Ware charging the chorus of fans at the night’s end with Heaven in Your Arms.
TRUE VISUALS, the specially curated visuals accompanying the new album, had you in a trance if you weren’t careful. It featured Tron-like neon colours and hundreds of clips from old Japanese car adverts. And if you were really caught off guard, you mind have found yourself burning out the soles of your trainers lost in magic of it all.
I’m sure Aus and New Zealand are going to lap them up for their tour there early next year.
