Australian punk legends These New South Whales have just unleashed their most urgent track yet. ‘INSTINCT’ hits like a brick through a window – all raw vocals, pounding bass, and zero fucks given.
The song’s message is brutally simple: “Listen to your instinct / Fuck what the rest of them think.” It’s the kind of mantra that feels essential right now.
Vocalist Jamie Timony explains the track came from personal frustration: “I’ve wasted so much energy over the years worrying about what other people think. It’s such a futile, counterproductive pursuit.”
Produced by Ben Greenberg (Show Me The Body, Depeche Mode), ‘INSTINCT’ showcases the Melbourne foursome firing on all cylinders. This isn’t the basement punk of their early days – it’s evolved, focused anger with serious production chops.
The band have mastered the art of balancing comedy with deadly serious music. Their Comedy Central mockumentary and hit podcast ‘What A Great Punk’ (approaching 500 episodes) prove their range, but the music stands entirely separate.
Their last album TNSW smashed into the ARIA charts at #9 and scored an ARIA nomination for Best Heavy Album. They’ve shared stages with Shame, Soft Play, and Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes, plus delivered an iconic triple j Like A Version cover of Chumbawumba’s ‘Tubthumping’.
The band hit the road this October with support from Delivery and The Antics:
Oct 17 – Brisbane, Crowbar
Oct 24 – Sydney, Crowbar
Oct 25 – Melbourne, The Night Cat
Oct 31 – Fremantle, Mojo’s
Nov 1 – Adelaide, Jive
‘INSTINCT’ signals a thrilling new chapter for Australia’s finest punk agitators. As Timony puts it: “Now more than ever, it feels important to stay connected to yourself, your instincts, and to what’s actually real.”
